How accurate are our first impressions?.The children's pitch pre-puberty was a good predictor of their pitch in adulthood. The British TV series, Seven Up!, which began in the 1960s and tracked a group of children every seven years throughout their lives, provided Katarzyna Pisanski, a bioacoustician at the University of Lyon, and her co-authors with a sample from which to measure changes to our voices over time. But you can predict, with a high degree of accuracy, what pitch a man's voice will be throughout their lives based on what it was at the age of seven. The pitch of both men and women's voices decrease through adolescence. ![]() What does this apparently universal preference say about how we judge character? And are there exceptions to the rule? If you want to get by as a competent speaker, it pays to go down an octave or two Male and female job candidates with lower-pitch voices are also more likely to be hired. ![]() We rate politicians with deeper voices as more serious and electable, regardless of sex. People associate deep voices with hunting abilities, career success and strength. The sexual preference for men with deep voices has been recorded in indigenous peoples from the Amazon to Tanzania and countless other Western and non-Western examples. "Whatever the culture, any woman coming from Japan or from the United States or from France or from anywhere in the world – they tend to prefer men with deep voices," says Melissa Barkat-Defradas, a linguistics researcher at the University of Montpellier. There is a vocal trait that seems to work for everyone, no matter where they are from. This in turn produces a "halo effect" – where we see good people as more attractive. Speakers with attractive voices are thought of as competent, kind and trustworthy. Some people have objectively more attractive voices than others, and the fact that these rules are nearly universal reveals an important part of our evolutionary history.Īccents are one way we make assessments of other people. It's a deep, sultry "bedroom voice" that gives some speakers their powers of seduction. Basically, you cannot speak with a frequency you are not capable of without using extended techniques such as subharmonics or fry, which are nearly impossible to carry through all forms of phonation to create a vocal F0 (average vocal frequency). The French call it " voix de chambre à coucher". The average vocal frequency of a person cannot be changed like some people earlier in this thread indicated that is dictated by both the length and thickness of the vocal folds. ![]() It also should be noted, my average vocal frequency is 77Hz, although, I can sing without extended techniques down to an E1 (40Hz). ![]() A male with a bass voice typically averages under 100Hz when speaking and down to a D2 when singing. Very old post, but I felt a need to say something. Hence, you're not very likely to find someone who can produce 80 Hz at all. On average the lowest fundamental frequency for the male voice is about 85Hz. For females the deep voice is contralto which is between 174.6-698.5 Hz. As the article says, the standard range from this type of voice is beween E 2 and E 4 which is 82.4-329.6 Hz. If we look at musical voices, lowest frequency male voice is the bass.
